Ed Weissman Antiques first opened for business in Middletown, Connecticut in the
late 1950's where Ed began a career that eventually led to specialization in early
American formal and country furniture prior to 1840, decorative arts, and 19th and
20th Century American and European paintings. He has exhibited in major shows
throughout the country, and served as a guest lecturer for museums, universities,
and small groups in New England and Florida. Ed continues his education
in antiques by attending various symposiums and museum exhibitions and
also maintains an extensive research library.
As a professional, full-time dealer, his continuous, hands on, working knowledge
has led to his ability to accurately evaluate, authenticate, and purchase a diverse
high quality inventory, and he is known in the trade, for having "a great eye...one of
the best in the business." Most of his inventory is fresh to the
marketplace and is purchased privately or from other dealers. He has also had open shops in the states
of Pennsylvania, Maine and Florida.
Ed and his wife, Margaret have worked
together in Portsmouth since 1980, where the shop is open on "an appointment
only" basis. It is a small eclectic shop with a choice selection of American and English furniture
from the Queen Anne, Chippendale, Federal and Sheraton periods. There is usually
a selection of metalware including fine brass candlesticks and other items dating
from Gothic to mid-19th Century, along with the appropriate decorative accessories
of the early American household. There is an interesting and diverse selection of
American and European paintings, with an occasional sampling of Chinese and
Japanese art.
